Measured output / Open hardware

High-output lights, published in the open.

Forge is a lineup of actively cooled flashlights and searchlights for people who read the numbers before they buy.

Why we exist

High-output lights are often sold on a peak lumen number. Runtime, step-down, and the battery required to hold that number are left off the page. When the light heats up, output falls, and the listing never said it would.

Many of those lights seal the cells inside. A worn battery ends the product. A failed board ends it too, because there is no drawing, no bill of materials, and no part to replace.

ModelYard publishes output, runtime, charging, and thermal figures before checkout. The lights ship fully assembled. The cells are standard and replaceable. Design files for released hardware stay public, so the build can be checked and serviced.

Four rules

  1. 01

    Published performance

Output, runtime, charging, and thermal figures are on the page before you pay. Forge 500 is listed at 45,000 lm, 500W, up to 2,500 m, and about 1,600,000 cd.

  2. 02

    Visible architecture

Internal systems, materials, and construction methods are documented. Shells on the current lights are 3D printed in PETG-FG or PETG-GF5.

  3. 03

    Replaceable modules

Serviceable components and standard cells are there so a worn module does not end the light. Forge 60, Forge 65, and Forge 66 run on a 2S 21700 pack. Forge 201 takes a 4S 21700 pack. Forge 500 takes a Makita 18V battery.

  4. 04

    Open source files

Bills of materials and design files stay available for inspection and modification. The Forge 60 mainboard and LED board are public as Gerber, BOM, and PNP files, with the EasyEDA Pro source.

Honest tradeoffs

  • Printed shells

Shells are 3D printed in PETG-FG or PETG-GF5. They are not injection-molded cases.

  • Battery is your choice

Every light is sold With Battery (a matched pack, ready to use) or Without Battery. Without Battery, Forge 60, 65, and 66 need your own 2S 21700 pack with a protection board, Forge 201 a 4S 21700 pack with an NTC protection board, and Forge 500 a Makita 18V battery.

  • High power is the point

Forge 201 is a 200W sustained light. Forge 500 is a 500W light. Those modes are not described here as long-runtime modes.

  • Built for technical users

Forge is for people who already work in lumens, candela, and 21700 cells. It is not a general consumer flashlight.

Open hardware and community

Released files live in the ModelYard hardware repository. Forge 60 is the set published now: mainboard and LED-board Gerbers, BOM, and PNP files, plus the EasyEDA Pro source.
